VIBBOIS project: dynamic behaviour of high-rise timber buildings

Data sharing

The CSTB has been studying vibrations in high-rise timber buildings for several years, notably as part of the European DynaTTB project (2019/2022). The ESB is doing the same as part of the instrumentation of its training building (since 2012), in-situ measurements for ADIVbois (2019) and the EVIBois project (2022/2024).

The VIBBOIS project is a continuation of this, with the aim of pooling data from recent studies carried out by the two entities, and focuses on several key areas:

  • Creation of a standardised database of damping measured in situ, taking into account the different construction systems and parameters such as wind speed.
  • Numerical modelling of the dynamic behaviour of the building in the EVIBois project, a rare case where there is no concrete core, in order to gain a better understanding of the specific features of this construction system.
  • Study of horizontal acceleration due to wind, establishing a link between in-situ measurements and regulatory calculation methods (Eurocode 1-4, Annex B), in order to improve building design..

Technical input for design offices

This project aims to facilitate the work of technical design offices when designing timber buildings, by providing them with tools and knowledge to better understand the effects of wind on comfort criteria. The aim is also to reassure the buyers and users of these buildings, as well as those involved in the timber industry.

The project’s deliverables are designed to provide methodological support for players in the sector:

  • A report on test protocols and methods for post-processing existing experimental data.
  • A guide to “good practice” in modelling, applied to the EVIBois building.
  • Presentations to players in the wood industry, in particular technical committees such as ADIVbois and the EC5 platform.
  • Publications in peer-reviewed scientific journals.

A scientific monitoring committee, including the EVIBois project supervisors (Laboratoires 3SR and ISTerre), will be set up to ensure the quality and relevance of the work.
